Recent studies suggest that while sunscreens reduce UV-induced redness, they do little to protect skin from free radicals. According to studies, sunscreen, even when applied properly, block only 55% of free radicals produced by UVA exposure.

It is necessary to know that UVA is believed to be the culprit of skin aging and possibly melanoma (skin cancer). This data suggest that in order to optimize UV protection sunscreens should be in conjunction with topical antioxidants.

The advantage of vitamin C over a sunscreen is that vitamin C can be absorbed into the cells and is generally still present about 30-36 hours after it has been applied topically on the skin. It will, therefore, still give sun protection even though you may have washed their skin or gone swimming. As a result of this we can expect that vitamin C can slow down photo aging. It is important to note that topical sunscreen must be applied over antioxidant 30 minutes prior to UV exposure in order to protect our skin from UV rays, so apply it BEFORE you get to the beach, not once you are there!

Spa topic: Medical Pedicure versus Classic Pedicure

Summer shoe season is coming! It's no surprise that women have started to feel self-conscious about the appearance of their feet.

If you suffer from such conditions as severe calluses and ingrown nails and corns, an easy medical pedicure is the solution. According to an article in the New York Times, medical pedicure refers to a treatment involving “extensive cleaning, sanding and shaping.“ Clients can expect to have their calluses, corns and ingrown toe-nails cut out with specialized tools, which get sterilized using an autoclave and put in disposable bags afterwards.

“Medi Pedi” could be a key way for people with underlying feet problems to avoid infections from a regular pedicure. A Vichy shower is a special kind of shower in which large quantities of warm water are poured over a spa patron while the client lies in a shallow (wet) bed. The bed is similar to a massage table, but with drainage for the water. Relaxing massage is then performed under the body temperature water sprinkles.

This massage increases circulation and lymphatic flows, which aid the body in cleansing itself of toxins.
The Vichy shower treatment provides pressure-point massage jets over your entire body to assist the relaxation and stimulation of the mind and body. The shower head itself is a seven-headed “rain bar”. The rain bar heads can be adjusted to provide either light rain massage or higher pressure to target specific tension areas. Imagine not having to deal with the tedium, frequency, expense and pain of constantly getting rid of unwanted hair. What if you could easily remove unwanted hair, and keep it away for a long time?

There is an alternative: laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is very popular and more than 780,000 treatments took place in 2005, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. But even with so many people benefiting from laser hair removal, there is still confusion and questions about the process.

Why use a laser?
One of the best ways to answer “Why use a laser?” is by illustrating why not to use other treatments. Here are a few reasons.

• Remember tweezers, shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams? Their disadvantage is that hair usually returns within tree to seven days.

• Electrolysis provides longer lasting results than conventional methods. For many, however, electrolysis is too painstaking as it treats one hair follicle at a time. Compared to electrolysis, laser hair removal typically requires fewer treatment sessions, less time per session and minimal discomfort.

• Oral medications such as spironoolactone (a diuretic) and proscar have successfully treated unwanted hair. But oral medications may not be appropriate for everyone. Results in the upper body last from seven to 11 weeks, and Mid-body results last from ten to 16 weeks.
